During a brief discussion on how he spends his spare time with THISDAY at the Enugu State Banquet Hall, Government House, Enugu, it was uncovered that even as a ranking Senator, he makes out time to play football to keep his body and brain fit.

Though it may be unbelievable for some, to confirm the veracity of the claim, inquisitive minds can watch out for the lawmaker at the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja, where he claims to make out time to play the round leather game whenever time permits him.

No doubts, judging from his passion for the game, he would have loved to dedicate more time to it but with his assignment as a federal lawmaker and the needs to attend including family and sundry others, he does not ample time for his passion.

It is a pastime he had been able to keep since his days in secondary school and it is one which he had discovered as a perfect way to keep is nerves under control by moving energetically and competitively.

“What I consider as a perfect pastime is playing football. I love to play football. I play football. I play with some of my friends. For me football is relaxing. It is energetic and competitive.

When you are able to play football, your muscles are relaxed and as a result, your brain is relaxed too. So, I love the game and I enjoy playing it.

When your brain is relaxed, you able to handle the responsibility of representing the people more effective,” he said.

Apart from playing football, he also loves being with people; chatting and engaging each other in fruitful discussions because to him, it helps to get other peoples’ opinions about issues.

“Being with people and engaging one and other in purposeful discussions is also something very relaxing to me. When you have that opportunity you are able to sample opinions contrary with yours. It helps to come to a broad-based and informed conclusion on issues,” he noted.

Nnaji, an ally of former governor of Enugu State, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, was locked in a battle of political supremacy in Enugu-east senatorial district after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him winner of the last senatorial seat in the district.

Years ago, Nnamani, had said he was retiring old-breed politicians in the state and grooming a new crop, and one of them was Nnaji – a new breed he groomed but who undid him in power equation in the state.

Today, in collaboration with the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekeweremadu; his counterpart from Enugu North, Senator Utazi Chukwuka and Governor Ifeanyi Ugwanyi of Enugu State, they are leading a new frontier to bring about the urgently needed economic revival in the state.

For some of his admirers, if politics were a profession, he is a professional because he commenced his journey to political leadership from the grassroots and rapidly rose through the ranks. He was three-time local government council chairman of Enugu-east local government area.

He recorded significant achievements during his tenures at that level. He was also a two-time member of the House of Representatives, where he was Deputy House Leader and committee chairman on commerce.

He also had records of achievements there.

He has always said his political philosophy is predicated on the need to justify the confidence reposed in him and fighting on the side of the people at every stage.

His legislative interests include poverty alleviation, electoral reforms, education, agriculture/agro-businesses, commerce and industry while his target achievement is basically to strengthen the capacity of government institutions with a view to improving the socio-economic well-being of his constituents and Nigerians in general.

Senator Gilbert Nnaji was born into the Royal Odezuluigbo Kingdom of Nike in Enugu-east local government.

His parents were the late Royal Highness, Igwe (Dr) Edward Anike Nnaji (Odezuligbo 11 of Nike and Life Patron, Enugu State Traditional Rulers Council) and late Lolo Nnennam Nnaji of Umuenwene Iji-Nike kindred.
