President Goodluck Jonathan announced government plans to invest
N7,405 trillion in inland waterways under the Transformation Agenda to
address an infrastructure deficit and boost productivity in the sector.
The
President said this in Lagos at a conference organized by the National
Inland Waterways Authority with the theme "Modernizing inland water
infrastructure and vessels for safe and sustainable inland waterways
transportation in Nigeria."
Represented by the Minister of Transport Senator Idris Umar, the President said his administration approved N25 billion for the dredging of River Benue and also created the appropriate legal and institutional framework to promote Private-Public Partnership, accelerating the necessary development in the inland waterways.
President Jonathan assured the foreign and local investors that the transport sector was a major area of concern in his Transformation Agenda and urged them to invest heavily in the sector.
Building more infrastructure is part of President Jonathan's efforts to move Nigeria forward.
